Every Saturday morning, I load pickles, tables, and props into my little Honda Fit and head to the Peachtree Road Farmers Market rain or shine. And every Saturday brings another possibility into my little pickle world. A few weeks ago, Athens native and now neighbor to the market… Tom Hodgson mentioned he’d be participating in a contest to benefit the Atlanta Center for Contemporary Art on June 6th…in the form of a Bloody Mary Contest. I was thrilled when he inquired about using my pickled asparagus to garnish his masterpiece!
I set Tom up with a PHUN canvas bag full of Phickles. I mean…the asparagus is awesome…but I figured with having the whole variety at his cocktail stirring fingertips…he would be sure to win.
The contest was between Tom and Forde Kay. Votes were cast by dollar bills cast into jars for the Bloody considered best by the 100 or so guests.
This all looks delicious to me! What a PHUN way to lure folks into the center for this free event which was part fundraiser and part outreach.
I’m thankful to Tom for sending me these pictures to use in this post…allowing me to catch a glimpse into the event and to see how he made my pickles shine. He says the competition was fierce but he won by a few dollars and he and his fans credit the Phickles Stix, Okies, Snaps, and Spears for the defining taste.
Many restaurants garnish their Bloodys with Phickles and back in the day…before Phickles, LLC was a real company… My husband, kids, and I used to sell the pickled beans …now called ‘Snaps’ to tailgaters at UGA games from a golf cart. If we saw bloody mary mix on their table…we’d stop and share a sample and before long we had fans waiting for us every home game day. Now on game days, places like Five Points Bottle Shop and ABC Package sell out of Phickles quickly with all the out of towners coming into town and the Athens locals who know… You can’t have a Phickled Mary without the Phickles!
With all the different farmers markets popping up all over Atlanta… we’re sure it’s hard for folks to decide which one to choose to spend their time on a precious Saturday morning. We encourage our PHriends to support the markets in their neighborhoods ….especially the ones that do their best to encourage sustainable, natural practices from their vendors. There are a few that we think are top notch…but at this time, we are committed to only one in the Atlanta area for this season. And…that one is the Peachtree Road Farmers Market located in the parking lot of the Cathedral of St. Philip Saturdays 8:30 – 12 pm. So….if you’ve wanted to try all the different pickles we make at the Pickle Parlor… you gotta plug 2744 Peachtree Road NW into your trusty GPS and come see us!
Samantha and Jessica are fitting right into our phickley world and did a great job greeting market supporters last Saturday. Samantha (the blonde on the left) is a cocktail waitress at Nona in downtown Athens where many a Phickle is served in bloody marys and their Phickletini …cleverly titled ‘The Dirty Phickle.’ Samantha also helps out at the Pickle Parlor with labeling and organizing. We love Samantha! Jessica (the brunette) is a bartender and waitress at another phickley spot in Athens …our favorite place for oysters … Square One Fish Company! …where Phickles a plenty are served in cocktails and they’ll even drizzle Phickle juice over the oysters upon request! We love Jessica! ….and are proud to have both of them on our team. We couldn’t do what we do and do it well…without the help of people like these girls…who love our pickles as much as we do. So…if you happen upon our booth at the market…shake hands with the girls helping us make all the phun happen every day in Athens and every Saturday in Atlanta!
Deviled eggs are hatching out onto southern menus all over Atlanta! We like a phickley version….made using diced Phickles Stix (our pickled carrots.) So…come on down to PRFM this Saturday and pick up some pasture free range eggs from Country Gardens Farm from Newnan, GA and a jar of ‘STIX’ from us and whip up some yumminess! To learn more about the farm behind those eggs…visit http://www.countrygardensfarm.com You will like what you learn about them!
We do a good bit of cooking in our own home and are especially enjoying all the yummy lettuces in season right now …especially the greens available from a few of the vendors at PRFM. Adding a Phickles Pickle on the side or diced and sprinkled in salads gives plates a fun kick and it’s pleasing to look at too. This Saturday…we look forward to checking out the Chef Demo from Woodfire Grill’s chef, EJ Hodgkinson. Chef Hodgkinson will prepare a fresh fennel recipe. Come watch and then try it yourself in your own kitchen! PRFM is also fun for the kids. This Saturday the Kids Learning Patch will help kids learn about how plants grow and seedling planting. The Kids Learning Patch is ongoing throughout the entire morning.
When we started Phickles….we decided we would only sell wholesale to locally-owned stores and restaurants. This decision has made the world closer….& everywhere we peddle to…we feel like we are neighbors! We love it….& we hope our PHriends will join with us in supporting the PHine establishments that have supported and continue to support us.
